I’ve read in so many places, questions from people who don’t know where to begin when they want a work-at-home opportunity. There are so many scams out there, and even when an opportunity sounds legitimate, there’s always a catch. I joined one group that said there were no strings, but I found out later that I needed to charge things to a credit card, so I got out of there quick. You should not have to pay for a legitimate job online. You will normally be required to have your own equipment, such as a computer, fax machine, or other office supplies, but no one should be charging you any type of fee to get started. If you are taking a class online to learn a skill, that’s a different story. Be sure to research online schools before you send them any money however, because there are good and bad online schools too. To get started, think of things you like to do when you’re on your computer. Do you like surfing the Net? There are people looking for folks to do research for certain things online, so that might be something you’d enjoy. Do you like to write? People sometimes [...]

Just because someone can type quickly doesn’t mean he or she will be a good transcriptionist. A person must be accurate, a good listener, have common sense, be good at research, spelling, punctuation and formatting–and that’s only the beginning! If I had a nickel for every time someone contacted me and said, “Are you hiring? I can type 5,000 words per minute!” I’d have a large jar full of nickels. Transcription is not for everyone, and it’s not for everyone who can type quickly either. Accuracy Accurately recording the words is really important, because if just one word is left out, it can change the entire meaning of a sentence. Good Listener Just hearing the words isn’t enough; a good transcriptionist must listen to what is being spoken and be able to concentrate on the storyline. If someone lets his mind wander while transcribing, words can be missed, errors are made, and sentence structure can be lost. Common Sense If a speaker is talking about ducks and you think he may have said “trucks,” would you type “trucks” and call it good? Common sense. Research Many times we are transcribing content from a specific niche, like health & fitness, and sometimes [...]

Back when I was first searching for a good web hosting service, I tried the popular GoDaddy. Even though their prices are low, I was not overly impressed with their dashboard for domain owners (tough to navigate; confusing), or their customer service. I’m not sure about now, but back then (2006), they didn’t even offer a toll-free customer service phone number. That, to me, is essential for a service such as they provide. So one day, I was reading through my latest issue of Website Magazine and saw an ad from 1and1.com. They were offering a special rate for new business accounts. I read over the features they offered, which sounded good, so I decided to switch my web hosting to them. Good move, Tara! Yes, I was impressed with their customer service (which included a toll-free phone number), their features, and their dashboard. Their site was very easy to navigate. The FAQ section is very comprehensive and has covered just about every question I’ve needed an answer to. The few times I’ve had to call customer service, their representatives were highly professional, friendly, and knew what they were talking about. They have helped to solve every issue thus far. I don’t [...]

Images and video have become the best way to get people’s attention on the Internet. Sure, some still read (like you–since you’re reading my blog post!) but most would like instant gratification, instant information, and entertainment… enter YouTube. I’ll admit, I have not utilized the full power of having my own YouTube channel, but it’s on the to-do list. What if you’re like me and would rather not be in the video? Find a friend who would be glad to star in the show…or use screen-capture software with you speaking in the background as a narrator. PowerPoint presentations can also be converted to video and posted on YouTube. You could also make a slide presentation video with pictures set to music, which is always entertaining. Do you have a newsletter that could be featured in video format, maybe screen shots with you reading the information? Use your imagination. Think of something that could somehow converted into video format and uploaded to your YouTube channel. Now that YouTube and Google are linked more closely, this will be an amazing help in folks finding you online.

Did you know that it takes a minimum of 4 times the audio length to complete a transcript? That’s straight working time too, without breaks. This would be in an ideal situation–very clear, understandable audio with a fluent speaker. Normally it can take more like 6 to 8 times the audio length to transcribe an audio or video. This means that at best, if you are paying someone $10 per audio hour, you’d literally be paying that person $2.50 per working hour! That’s just not right. Remember, you get what you pay for, and when you want a high-quality product to share with your readers, you want to choose a transcription service that can deliver that quality. For a limited time: As a special offer to our new clients, we would like to show you what a quality transcript looks like by transcribing up to 30 minutes of your audio or video file at a discounted rate of $1.25 per A/V minute, prepaid.
My client sent me an audio that I could not use with my transcription software. Did I panic? Not too much. I just went to my favorite software developers to see if they had something I could use to convert his audio into a usable format. Same with video–sometimes I don’t need the video content, just the audio, so I have software I can use to extract the audio as an MP3 and just load that file into my transcription software. All of these options have been free. A lot of software creators offer free trials–try before you buy. Some have limited functionality; others offer the full program. Usually the free version suits my needs, but occasionally I need an upgrade to do more advanced things, so I’m happy to pay $20 or $30 for a lifetime license of the particular program. I had a client who would send me his video files on DVD. I needed to extract the videos quickly and efficiently, so I paid around $30 for the software, mostly because the project I was working on would pay for it with just one file and I’d still make a hefty profit. Now I have the program [...]

If you frequently interview other people on audio or video, listen to yourself on the playback. Do you say “umm,” “uh,” ”you know,” or any other non-essential word or phrase frequently? These are called word whiskers and can be conquered and prevented! Be aware of the words you use…it makes for a more polished, smooth-sounding recording. Never fear, however–it is part of our job as professional transcriptionists to clean up the finished transcript, and we are able to remove all of those annoying word whiskers. This is called non-verbatim transcribing. We can fix run-on sentences, correct mistakes, and make the transcript easy to read, a polished document to present to your audience. On the other hand, you may be conducting some kind of research where you would require every single word, cough, laugh and sound to be transcribed. This is called verbatim transcribing, and we are also very experienced in this type of work. We can insert line numbering and even time codes to make the job of the quality-control or fact-checker staff easier. So this is something to keep in mind when requesting a transcript–would you like non-verbatim or verbatim?

Some say that the printed page is going out of style, but in the world of turning recordings into print, it’s alive and well. A transcript of your audio can help those who are hearing impaired to gain the same information as those who listen to the recording. Cara Sayer, Owner and Inventor of www.SnoozeShade.com approached us asking for her YouTube videos to be transcribed. Cara has been very generous with gifts of her product in the past, so we decided to offer her the opportunity to have closed-captioning added to her YouTube videos at no extra cost. Here is a sample… After the video starts playing, click on the red CC box to show the subtitles/captions: Think of how much larger your audience would be if you offered your material in writing, either by using subtitling or closed captions, or by having your audio and video files transcribed for people to read. Besides the hearing-impaired community, many people would rather read the material instead of watching a video or listening to an audio. So by offering both options, you also increase your following!

Does a person necessarily have to type really fast to be a good transcriptionist? My answer is: NO! I really don’t care how quickly a person even hunts & pecks…if the finished product is not accurate, it means nothing that you can type 200 WPM. I will admit that I’m not the fastest typist on earth, but my finished product is very accurate–word, spelling and punctuation-wise. I’ve had people working for me in the past who turn in transcripts that they’ve created by using speech-recognition software, thinking it will enable them to crank out a million transcripts a day and make them lots of money. Wrong! Most of them were so inaccurate, I had to basically type them over myself. I don’t work with those folks any more, needless to say. In order to be in tune with the speakers on an audio, a person needs to actually listen to what is being said and not type mindlessly, or grievous errors will surface. I like to pretend that I’m typing the script for a play and I want to convey to the actors the exact way the words should be spoken, so using the correct punctuation and the correct words [...]
